Curriculum Used in Room 3!
Language Arts-
“Good reading practice = better readers”
We will be using the Open Court Reading Program as our core curriculum this year in grades K-5. Open Court Reading “is a research-based curriculum grounded in systematic, explicit instruction of phonemic awareness, phonics and word knowledge, comprehension skills and strategies, inquiry skills and strategies, and writing and language arts skills and strategies.”
MathematicsOur Math program is "enVision Mathematics”. This year will be a continuation of the skills and activities presented in the first grade. Key concepts to focus on at this point in September
1. addition math facts (up to 20.. ex: 8+9=17)
2. recognizing coins and counting coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters)
Science
GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) strategies will be used in order to introduce our science units this year. We will be focusing our study on two units: Living Things Grow and Change (Plants, Animals, and people), and Exploring the Earth’s Surface (rocks, minerals, fossils).
Social StudiesGLAD strategies will also be used in order to implement our social studies curriculum this year. This year we will be focusing on these units of study: Family Ties (Ancestors and Family), A Working World (jobs and their importance to people), People, Places and Holidays (How Americans Celebrate) and Earth, Our Home (Earth’s Land and Waters)
Physical Education
Every Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon
1. Focus of the program is form and health
2. Proper dress
a. Comfortable shoes: Tennis shoes, sneakers.
(Please no slippers, or boots that the children cannot run in)
b. Girls must wear shorts under their dresses
c. Medical excuses must be accompanied by a note. Everyone will participate unless they have a note.
3. Towels for P.E. should be the length of the student. (approximately 4-5ft. long)
